Baby Appeal Submitted By: blackbird.
"Baby Appeal" came to fruition when Anthony Kiedis and Flea went to New York and tried to get themselves booked by playing their demo tape for the managers of clubs. Unable to get a single gig booked, they went to the park and put in the tape. As Anthony said in his autobiography, "We wanted someone to hear this fucking tape." They noticed that every kid that heard it completely loved it. This caused Anthony to realize that they had "baby appeal." He wrote the song when he got back to Los Angeles.

The character Dani also appeared in the Red Hot Chili Peppers' 2002 single "By the Way", as well as the song "Californication" as it alludes to a "Teenage bride with a baby inside/Gettin' high on information"; although there is no mention of her. The character's story comes to an end in "Dani California", with her death.

The song is about bassist Flea's dog, Martian, who died during the recording of the album. Martian was a big part of the band, the huge dog attended most of the band's practices and had grown to be a part of their family. Anthony Kiedis' dog, Buster, died during the recording of the CD, too. The song ends with a poem that Kiedis chose from a book of poems. This poem is spoken, not sung and was an experiment. Kiedis has stated that the poem was not written for the song but it was by chance that it fit in with the song and was the right length on the first try.
