The Medic Droid
Vote Sum: 5
The Medic Droid was started in 2006 with Chris Donathon, Hector 3000, and Johnny Droid. Their song "Fer Sure" got an outstanding amount of popularity over myspace, and they were noticed by their former manager Avery Andon who brought the band to New York where they played their first live show opening for Enter Shikari at The Bowery Ballroom and caught the eye of A&R's from Epic Records who would later go on to sign the band. The group eventually made two new songs "Keeping Up With The Joneses" and "FScene8", enlisting the help of Australian DJ S3RL to remix these songs. In 2007, Johnny Droid left the band, due to issues with the other members. After a few months, they hired Storm. Storm stuck with them for a few months, and then left the band in early 2008. The Medic Droid was signed to Modern Art Records, a local Phoenix indie label distributed by Epic Records. They wrote and recorded their debut album What's Your Medium? and it was released June 10, 2008.

Gil Mantera's Party Dream Nominated by Christopher on 10/09/2008, 07:54 PM.
Gil Mantera's Party Dream
Vote Sum: 5
Gil Mantera’s Party Dream are stepbrothers Ultimate Donny and Gil Mantera from Youngstown, Ohio. Donny plays guitar and sings. Gil plays keyboards, bass, and sings through a vocoder. There is no real genre that can hold them. Live is the best way to experience this band. Their career started at a Youngstown bar called Nyabhinghi. When a band failed to show, the brothers took the stage and started to rock the house. The duo started playing shows back and forth between the Youngstown and Columbus, Ohio scenes in 2000, sharing stages with a variety of bands of different genres. They often play with and have collaborated with Grand Buffet of Pittsburgh, PA. In 2004, the band self-released the album Once Triangular. It was a way for longtime fans to introduce friends to the band’s comedic rock style. Their infamy began to spread! In 2006, they released Bloodsongs. Their fan base grew even further. At live shows you may catch covers of Fleetwood Mac and Joy Division.
Jack's Mannequin Nominated by Christopher on 10/02/2008, 07:52 PM.
Jack's Mannequin
Vote Sum: 2
Andrew McMahon started out in music initially as the lead vocalist and pianist for the Orange County, California piano rock band, Something Corporate. The primary impulse behind McMahon's solo project Jack's Mannequin was a song he recorded in December 2000 titled "Locked Doors". He felt the song was too different from previous Something Corporate material to be one of their songs. He realized that if he ever decided to release it, it would be on a solo album rather than a Something Corporate record. The idea seemed outlandish until late summer of 2004 when both McMahon and his bandmates were exhausted from months of touring. They decided to take a temporary break. During his time off, McMahon laid down piano and vocal tracks for a song on Hidden in Plain View's Life in Dreaming and two songs on Tommy Lee's Tommyland: The Ride. Their first album, titled Everything In Transit, was released in August 2005 and received a positive response from fans and critics alike.

Rolo Tomassi

"Together, Ed, James and two blokes called Joe fire off electrified nuggets of grinding guitars, tipping, tapping beats and shrill no-time synth sounds for a girl called Eva to vomit hot hell-noise over."
"Having been a band for four years now, they have carved their own niche in the UK underground with their abrasive brand of grindcore-hardcore-electro-indie punctuated with spastic jazz freak outs. [...] Their youth gives potential for a long and successful career and are most certainly a band to look out for in the future. However, more importantly, given the quality of their debut album, 'Hysterics', Rolo Tomassi are worthy of your attention right now."
"'Hysterics' burgeons with frantic paces and fractured time signatures, over-the-top chromatic riffs and lead lines on guitar and synthesizer, cacophonic cascades of percussion giving way to moments of playground horror and tension, vocals both shrieked and murmured… hell, you get all that within the space of a single track."

Von Iva
Vote Sum: 8
Von Iva creates their own brand of music by combining breakbeat cool with a dance punk attitude. They first made a name for themselves thanks to their eye-popping, heart stopping live performances, and their rambunctious debut EP grabbed the attention of both critics and fans. Before they knew it this hard working, D.I.Y band was performing at the X Games and playing to huge crowds in Japan. They have also had their music featured on Showtime’s L Word and this summer Von Iva will be appear frequently on MTV’s Logo Channel performing the theme song for the surfing reality show, Curl Girls. Now a triple threat with Jillian Iva on Vox, Becky Kupersmith on Keys, and Kelly Harris on Drums, V.I. has created a genre bending original sound that will move even the most reserved to dance. They have just completed their highly anticipated full length record titled "Our Own Island". Fueled by simplicity, these tracks are poised to revive sweaty dance floors and sold-out audiences across the globe.

JMT is an underground hip-hop duo hailing from Philadelphia, PA, comprising high school friends DJ Stoupe and emcee Vinnie Paz. Known for dark, gritty production, creative rhymes, and a long list of collaborations with regional underground peers and legends. JMT officially debuted with Amber Probe in 1996. The B-side of that album was also included in The Psycho-Social LP, which was released a year later. On this album Vinnie Paz called himself Ikon the Verbal Hologram. The album contained themes of conspiracy theories and ancient Middle-Eastern mythology. It also featured the recording debut of fellow Philly rap-group Lost Children of Babylon and Connecticut’s Apathy of the Demigodz on multiple songs. However the LCOB soon parted ways with JMT, and in a 2001 interview member Cosmic Crusader cited that while Vinnie Paz had assured them that his cause was all for spiritual hip-hop, he soon saw that Vinnie Paz was not really spiritual at all, but only interested in tapping that fan base.
Hollywood Undead Nominated by Christopher on 09/04/2008, 12:47 AM.
Hollywood Undead
Vote Sum: 4
Hollywood Undead have concocted an explosive Molotov cocktail of hip hop, rock and screamo, forging an alternative style that’s primed to blow the scene up. They craft incisive, sharp and sarcastic raps that slash the jugular of mainstream pop culture. They aren’t your standard rap or rock crew. They’re something new, dangerous, funny and alive. Songs crescendo from intelligent, clever rhymes that would make Slim Shady wince to eerie, metallic rhythms that could get Hot Topic bouncing. Johnny 3 Tears, J-Dog and Charlie Scene lead the lyrical charge. Deuce busts out the beats, while Da Kurlzz drops rhymes, and Funny Man hypes the fray. Donning individual masks, Hollywood Undead possess a dark aesthetic that’s connected to their hometown’s depravity. Rising to prominence via My Space, these six masked marauders stood at number one on the site’s music chart, leading to endless friend requests and plays. However, Hollywood U. have got the gusto to be earth shattering far beyond cyberspace.
Ernie Halter Nominated by Christopher on 08/27/2008, 07:33 PM.
Ernie Halter
Vote Sum: 4
Halter is a soul-infused pop singer / songwriter, a guy who’s been influenced as much by the Lennon/McCartney as he has by Otis Redding. But don’t wrack your brain trying to categorize him. Just listen to his music. Born in Inglewood, CA, raised in Orange County, Ernie Halter grew up during a short but important technological era, "The Cassette Generation". With a collection that included the Beatle’s Abbey Road, Billy Joel’s Glass Houses, and Elton John’s Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. However the very first tape Halter ever bought, was Go-Go’s Beauty and the Beat. Halter recalls, Belinda Carlisle was a little hottie and even at six years old, I knew this to be true. Halter also tuned into the FM dial on a regular basis during his childhood, staying glued to the radio as he soaked up all the pop goodness. During his college years, a friend made him a mix tape of Stevie Wonder’s greatest hits, which he played over and over until he knew every note. But we’re getting more.
The Hush Sound Nominated by Christopher on 08/20/2008, 04:09 PM.
The Hush Sound
Vote Sum: 3
What began as random jam sessions between friends Bob Morris and Greta Salpeter eventually grew into the Chicago indie pop quartet the Hush Sound. A classically trained pianist since age three, Salpeter was introduced to Morris by mutual friends when they were in 7th and 10th grade, respectively. The two played together whenever free time would allow, and by winter 2004 / 2005 they had seriously begun writing songs. Originally called "the Hush" ("Sound" was added later upon discovering a rapper shared their name) the two ultimately decided to expand their acoustic duo to include drums and bass. Morris got in contact with friends from the local Chicago scene, Darren Wilson and Chris Faller, who were both looking for a new band to play with. Wilson was onboard first, but it wasn't until watching a tape of the trio's first performance that Faller decided to join as well. Impressed by what he saw, Faller quit his other two bands and solidified the Hush Sound's lineup in February 2005.
Deerhoof Nominated by Christopher on 08/13/2008, 03:00 PM.
Deerhoof
Vote Sum: 5
Deerhoof is a San Francisco musical group, currently consisting of Satomi Matsuzaki (vocals and bass), John Dieterich (guitar), Ed Rodriguez (guitar as well) and Greg Saunier (drums). Although typically classified as an indie rock band, due to their having been on an indie rock label (Kill Rock Stars) for the entirety of their career, the mercurial and unconventional nature of Deerhoof's music makes genre identification difficult, and perhaps inappropriate. But several recurring features can be said to constitute Deerhoof's distinctive sound: unassuming vocal delivery set against hyper-expressive instrumental playing; an elastic approach to group dynamics and rhythm more akin to the rubato of classical music performance practice than rock; odd yet highly memorable melodies; harmonic sophistication and dissonance; disjointed, condensed, asymmetrical and otherwise unconventional song structures; raw and at times strident sound surfaces; improvisation and general creative restlessness.
Amos Lee Nominated by Christopher on 08/06/2008, 01:48 PM.
Amos Lee
Vote Sum: 3
Lee grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Cherry Hill, New Jersey, USA. He has been quoted as saying that he is fortunate to have seen different sides of life in America. Lee enrolled at the University of South Carolina in 1995. He began to play guitar and write songs seriously while he studied English. After graduating with an English degree, Lee moved back to Philadelphia to teach elementary school. He later made the tough decision to stop teaching in order to pursue a career in music. Norah Jones was the person who finally gave Lee his big breakthrough when she asked him to open for her 2004 tour. Highly influenced by soul, folk, and blues music, Lee directs his music with a spirit and presence rooted in American tradition. Taking inspiration from soul greats Stevie Wonder, and Donny Hathaway, and folk legends, John Prine and Dave Van Ronk, Amos delivers a unique breed of folky soul music that aims to unite, uplift and inspire.
Reggie And The Full Effect Nominated by Christopher on 07/30/2008, 10:11 AM.
Reggie And The Full Effect
Vote Sum: 6
Reggie and the Full Effect first burst onto the scene during a break from The Get Up Kids. James Dewees, keyboardist for the forementioned group wrote, recorded and performed all of the music and vocals himself. What started off as a gimmick would end up turning into a full touring band. As a former drummer for Coalesce, James has written some hardcore parts into Reggie and the Full Effect (Coalesce singer Sean Ingram shows up randomly through R.A.T.F.E. records). This became more apparent when his wife filed for divorce and his music became harder than it had been and his lyrics became more personal and harsh. He played keys on one New Found Glory song and often joined them on stage during their Back to Basics tour in the spring of 2005. More recently, Dewees has announced playing keyboard on some of My Chemical Romance’s new CD. When asked about "Reggie" he said that once the new My Chemical Romance CD comes out, he will be touring with them and become a full blown member of MCR.

Kill Me Tomorrow Nominated by Christopher on 07/04/2008, 07:14 PM.
Kill Me Tomorrow
Vote Sum: 4
Call it art rock, new wave, indie rock or post-punk. No matter how you classify it, Kill Me Tomorrow creates music that hearkens the past yet maintains its own distinctly modern sound. The trio layers lots of distortion (pedals, pedals and more pedals), effects and other electronic samples with melodic guitars, hypnotic drums and haunting vocals. Formed in late 1996 by vocalist / drummer Zack and bassist K8 Wentz, Kill Me Tomorrow secured their current three piece lineup in mid 2000, with the addition of guitarist Dan Wise. Fans of atmospheric dissonance like that of early Death In June and Joy Division will certainly not be disappointed, but Kill Me Tomorrow are far from being a "retro" band. More a unique cross-section of old and new ideas, sort of contemporary and revivalist. The band has toured with many notable acts such as The Locust, Les Georges Leningrad, Toys That Kill, Dance Disaster Movement, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Dios Malos, Blackheart Procession.

Combichrist is a Norwegian ebm music group, currently situated in the United States. In 2003 Andy LaPlegua from Icon of Coil wrote a few power noise/techno cross over tracks under the name of Drive. This was later changed to Combichrist (by Nick Wilson) when the debut album, The Joy of Gunz was set to be released on Out Of Line. The follow up EPs and the clamour for live shows sent Combichrist out on the road where they would become known for strong and energetic performances. The second EP, Sex, Drogen und Industrial, spent 7 weeks at number one in the DAC charts. Last March they released their new LP ‘What the fuck is wrong with you people?’
Bad Wizard Nominated by Christopher on 06/20/2008, 03:17 PM.
Bad Wizard
Vote Sum: 3
Formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1999 by singer Curtis Brown and drummer Scott Nutt, Bad Wizard soon migrated north to New York City, where they would eventually add guitarist Eddie Lynch and bassist Marc Tanner to their lineup. Boasting a high-energy hard rock sound combining AC/DC’s bombast and the MC5’s manic hyperactivity with traces of Southern rock, the band’s electrifying debut album, Free and Easy, was released by independent Tee Pee Records in 2001. Tina Gorin (ex-Helldorado) was later added on slide guitar and a new rhythm section (bassist Pat and drummer Ron) sat in for 2002’s Sophisticated Mouth. A far less memorable, and probably rushed, sophomore outing that nevertheless saw Bad Wizard making a name for themselves as one of New York’s hardest-working live combos. Album number three, entitled #1 Tonite!, arrived two years later through the band’s new label, Howler Records, and showed some improvement, as well as new bassist Brett Falcon and Scott Nutt back behind the kit.

With a clear vision of long-term goals uninhibited by public opinion, Bleed the Sky are claiming their place in the industry by expelling the initial interpretation of metal with an unprecedented audacity that instead creates a personal, and empathetic relationship with each listener. Combined with a drive to achieve and a dedication to consistency that is evaded by most.

An Orlando, Florida based trio, hell raised on love and destruction with a stylistic of electro / pop / and thrashing screams that make you want to jump up and dance. Their music is pure lust and couture something unheard of before. Created by three stars and loved by thousands. Dahvie Vanity a hair dresser at the age of sixteen went on and expressed his art through hair. Started at a young age getting involved with music and played guitar/keys for many local acts. Eventually times would change and the direction of being a leader and a front man decided the new fate of this twisted and sick future of a music revolution. Chris a member of City Skyscrape discovered Dahvie and together formed Blood On The Dance Floor. A combination of two different elements coming together to give this music world a breathe of fresh air. Eventually Rebecca would come and team up with the dynamic duo to create a luscious mix of mesh and sound, a colour like no other.
American Me Nominated by Christopher on 05/28/2008, 07:28 PM.
American Me
Vote Sum: 3
American Me is a Portland, OR based band and plays an arsenal of loud, pissed, violent hardcore. Coming together as a five piece from former members of It Prevails and Hatchet Diaries, American Me's sonically induced form of devastating music comes from inspiration of all aspects of their lives. Everything from social values to personal issues that the regular nine to five person experiences. They have done a significant amount of touring, and has shared the stage with a wide array of successful acts including Parkway Drive, Warriors, Misery Signals, Acacia Strain, Remembering Never, Emmure, and many more. American Me is an early 90s movie starring Edward Olmos about gang life in an LA prison. "It’s a very violent and emotional movie, yet it really captures the audience. The movie was able to be very brutal and very passionate at the same time, and we kind of feel that it was a good parallel to our music." So says vocalist Tony Tataje in description of where their band name comes from.

Glassjaw is an influential four piece (formerly five piece) post hardcore band from Long Island, New York. The band is fronted by vocalist Daryl Palumbo and guitarist Justin Beck, and has undergone numerous line-up changes since their inception. The band is understood to have been influential in the progression of the underground music scene in the Eastern United States and beyond. They recorded some demos before releasing the EP “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” in 1997, and recorded their first full length album “Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence” in 2000 on Roadrunner Records. The record brought the band out of Long Island and into the hands of a dedicated grass-roots following. Their sophomore album “Worship and Tribute” was released in 2002 on Warner Brothers Records. Although it received some MTV airtime, a Grammy nomination and a peak at #82 on the Billboard top 200, “Worship and Tribute” was a departure from the debut and was met with mixed reviews from fans.

Milka
Vote Sum: 4
Milka is a phenomenon that captivates every audience with an all out vocal assault backed by brutally polished drums and Latin spiced percussion. Rumbling bass grooves fused with precise guitars only add to the depth of this bands incredibly unique, yet catchy sound. Their performances of sheer force and vigor are buffered by the feminine poise and confidence in bilingual front-woman Milkanette Ramos. Each song is a story sung in a style that will give you goose bumps and provoke emotions stronger than current mainstream acts like Shakira, No Doubt, Evanescence, and Garbage. Two of the band memebers are audio engineers that have worked with the likes of John Paul Jones, N'Sync, Lil 'Kim and Sevendust, so this band has seen it all, and is ready to blow the mainstream out of the water!
Gil Mantera's Party Dream Nominated by Kari Byron's Sex Cyborg on 05/07/2008, 05:18 PM.
Gil Mantera's Party Dream
Vote Sum: 3
Too many people's fascination with the '80s manifests itself in the occasional lame '80s-themed dance party, complete with Hypercolor shirts and stirrup pants. Gil Mantera's Party Dream lives in '80s party mode but amps up the dirty, filthy, sexy qualities of the neon decade that so often get forgotten. Synths, pulsing drum machines, vocoders and the occasional hot-lick guitar solo help make a GMPD show part male burlesque, part exercise video, part Dungeons & Dragons convention.
The boys tour relentlessly and have built up a name for themselves as a truly fun live act, an hour-long orgy of alcohol-fueled mayhem. The show is equal parts dance party and stand-up routine, as the two assume the guise of Midwestern yokels and wax profane on just about everything around them. Then the clothes come off, and pretty soon the audience is going nuts for over-the-top anthems about water slides and the alienating effects of 21st century technology.

It’s also a sound that has resonated with thousands of people across the country. The band’s new recording is not only their most complex and mature effort to date but, it’s also evidence of the rich emotional narrative that they’ve been able to construct.

School Boy Humor
Vote Sum: 2
The Arkansas based band, formed in 2004, consists of Phil Evans and Anthony Evans who share vocalist and guitarist duties, drummer Greg Scherer, bassist Pierce Hunter, and keyboardist and vocalist Caleb Spillyards. The boys are between 19 and 20 in age. The name School Boy Humor came about when the band members were watching a Blink-182 video, and Blink-182 was described as having "school boy humor." The name just stuck. School Boy Humor's musical influences span from one side of the music spectrum to the other. "There are a ton. They range from Underoath, to The Higher, to Bjork, and Jamestown Story," Spillyards said. The band has a different sound from the many bands out at the moment. "We just are what we are," Spillyards said. "We just wanna be rock that you can dance to, so I guess dancy, rocky rock." The band's writing process is about the same as it is for most bands. "Generally one of us brings an idea to the band and from there, we all collaborate," Spillyards said.
