Rain, come down, and fall forever
Drain, the dirt, into the wasteland
Pray, for sound, to quiet the howling
Feel, no shame, too brave
Feel, afraid, to wait forever
Kneel, to fade, the day's corrosion
Crawl, depart, towards perdition...

After the terrible 5 year long wait in the post-lateralus era, Tool has finally come with new material. And yes, it’s good. Damn bloody good. The first single from the album was leaked a couple of days before the album was and I have to say that I thought it was a good song but not on par with their other singles. But the album isn’t at all like Vicarious. It’s much darker and experimental. Vicarious is one off the most traditional tool rock-songs on the album since the rest is very long, eerie and like I sad before experimental.
On an emotional level I’d say this is a step up from Lateralus (And that means a lot coming from me since Lateralus is my favourite album I ever heard).
The vocals are a bit tuned down but Maynard is experimenting a lot with his voice. The Vocals on Rosetta Stones for instance aren’t like anything he has ever done before and on both the Wings for Marie tracks he sounds so powerful and emotional it just makes me feel uncomfortable. The most important factor is the album is the mood, it’s very dark. The title track has these rain parts which are quite the depressing thing to hear in the song.
If I must compare it to other albums tool made I’d say it comes pretty close to Salival, perhaps a bit like the long Pushit version on the album. It’s actually a whole new sound for them.
Song highlights:
Wings for Marie (both parts)
Rosetta Stoned
Right in Two
P.S, I know the album isn’t really out yet but I’m a big tool fan and I couldn’t wait. I’ll buy the thing the day it comes out.
