"There's an island hidden in the sound." The starting words from the epic second song on this wonderful album by The Decemberists. Those words spoke volumes to me, and there is deffinetly an island of treasure embedded in the words and music of this masterpiece.

I have always been a fan of this group, but moreorless just listened to them on random, but never payed much attention to them completely. That changed drastically when I first heard this album during the start of October. Suddenly it just clicked with me. I still don't know what it is. This album just pulls me into the stories, and makes me feel asthough I'm one of the characters in the plot.

The stories themselves are filled with murders, deception, lies, and love (or wait, isn't that just the second song?) The writing style is exactly what you would expect from the group, and sounds asthough it's from the early 1800's and taking place in London, and is just one epic tale after another. Unlike most conventional album you would hear, this is a type of concept album that is different than most. Basically any song from it could be heard as a single itself, but yet when put all together, it's just.....UGH. Bloody perfection.

If you're a fan of indie, country, folk, or even story telling, this is the album for you. It's their best to date in my opinion (trust me, that says a lot) and is one of the best album's you'll hear in 2006. Personally, it's my second favorite of the year (behind Show Your Bones by The Yeah Yeah Yeahs of course) and my favorite folk album that I've heard. I would say sample a couple tracks from it, and if you enjoy them, go out and buy it. It's worth your money for sure.
