Here we have the long awaited new album from the twins, T&S. Now more than likely, if you're a fan of this duo, than you know most of their work since they have quite the cult following, and 90% of their fans (including myself) are very devoted to their work. Now, on that note you should know how each album they released seemed to evolve from the previous and the addition of new instruments, and experimenting with vocals is inevitable with them. Their previous album, So Jealous, really showed this evolution with some fast paced electric guitars, and distorted vocals. It was a side of them that I wasn't really liking however, and just didn't seem to fit them. You can see by a lot of my comments on their work that I was missing the olden style of just them with a couple acoustic guitars, and natural singing. In a word, "raw." It was a style that they mastered, and grew this cult following with. After So Jealous I was worried that this style would be gone for them, and that they would continue experimenting with synthesizers. Well, I guess my fears came true.

The Con is a very mechanical album, with a lot of short songs that really seem to lack flow. The addition to keyboards on most songs takes away totally from their folk background, and unfortunately hides their true, gifted voices. With this, it also tends to make certain songs sound alike, and the shortness of, well, most songs actually, makes them easily forgettable. The album lacks any natural flow, and in my opinion, comes off very juvenile at some points.

Now don't get me wrong, the album is not a total loss. It does have a couple high points, and a few songs that did catch my attention. For example, "Are You Ten Years Ago" has a techno beat, and a certain darkness that surrounds it to make it very intriguing. This same darkness tries to show itself on most songs on the album, but doesn't really shine except in the for mentioned, and "Like O, Like H." A few songs also try to capture the old sound as well, such as Hop A Plane (which sounds A LOT like Speak Slow) and Floorplan.

So will this album be a success? Most definitely. Why? Because of that mentioned cult following. T&S fans are some of the most devoted fans the industry has seen, and will really buy anything with their name on it. I'm already seeing comments everywhere about this being the album of the year, and some of their best work yet. Please don't kid yourself. Go back and put on your copy of If It Was You and remember the good that was. The days of Living Room, Heavy, Don't Confess, The First, This Is Everything, etc, etc, etc seem to be gone for good, so keep on writing all your fan mail about how this is their best album yet, but just remember...with this style means no more songs like them.
