Part 2 of my INXS reviews series, we have 'Underneath The Colours'. And I'm going to be strait-up about this album. It is my least favourite of all of INXS's album (excluding 'Switch', for obvious reasons). Underneath The Colours is the bands slowest, mellowest of releases, amd though not necessarily a bad thing, it's not the INXS we all know.
That said, this album ins't a total write-off. Songs like 'Horizons', 'Fair Weather Ahead', 'Night Of Rebellion' and 'Barbarian' do make this a worthwhile listen. But only for the die-hard INXS fan. If there was an album to pick up to first check out the band, this definately wouldn't be it. The bands self-titled release was cool in a cheesy way, but this is just slow, low-profile, and not what I'd call rock (save a few tracks which do have killer guitar riffs: eg. 'Barbarian').
In summing up, I'd only recommend this album as a listen once you've heard INXS other albums. As I said, it's not a complete write-off, but newcomers to INXS just won't appreciate it.
