Parkway Drive slowly became one of my favorite bands the more I listened to their album "Killing With A Smile." After seeing them live, they solidified that spot, and with the release of another major label album, I was sure they were going to go even higher on that list.
My hopes for the albums definitely surpassed the actual quality of it. The album has a whole is just slightly disappointing in far too many spots. It has its moments where it really grabs your attention, but for the most part I feel its just not anything different from "Killing With A Smile," which isnt necessarily a bad thing, but if I want that albu, thats what Id listen to.
This album, from the beginning, starts off pretty well. "The Siren's Song" is a good opener with a couple of good breakdowns and catchy riffs that orignally drew my attention to this band. Alot of it seemed to be thrown together and the flow of the song didnt seem to go so easily as it did on their previous album. Thats my main problem with the majority of songs on this album. I find that most of the songs are just riffs compiled one after another with a couple of breakdowns thrown in the middle, no matter it is, whereas it wasnt thought out as much as it should have. With songs like "Feed Them To The Pigs" and "Idols and Anchors," the songs also get very repetitive, using the same riff for a certain part over and over in that song, making that particular riff less enjoyable or listenable every time you hear it.
The thing that gets me is that there are songs on here that sound like a progression from "Killing With A Smile." Songs like "The Siren's Song", "Boneyards" and "Horizons" all encompass what makes this band great, and the technicality of those songs shows the progression that the band shouldve taken throughout the entire album. Between the intro "Begin," the minute long song "Moments In Oblivion" and the song that I firmly believe they wrote in 5 minutes, "Dead Man's Chest," it seems that maybe they had a little bit more trouble writing songs this time around.
Ive tried on numerous occasions to like this album, giving the disc about 7 spins all the way through, but I only find myself enjoying 3 songs on the entire disc. Those 3 songs show the progression that this band has the ability of making and that they have the talent to write better songs than 2/3's of the ones on this album. Although itll probably be awhile until they release another album, I will continue listening to "Killing With A Smile," because that album easily is above and beyond this one.
