After the release of "Stabbing The Drama," it seemed Soilwork were trying to get back to where they were musically before they released "Figure Number Five," which is without a doubt this bands worst release. This album picks up right where their last left off.
This album was hyped by the fact that it was their best released since "Natural Born Chaos," with even some people saying its better. Is it? No, but with that said, its the closest theyve came since its released.
"Sworn To A Great Divide" combines elements of their sound, both past and present. Fast, melodic death metal ("The Pittsburgh Syndrome") and melodies ("Light Discovering Darkness") cover almost every single track on this album. Bjorns vocals are the best Ive heard in a long time with his clean vocals being crisper than ever and even getting very low in his range with his screaming. Musically, its not the best theyve done, with the riffs being relatively simple, but I was surprised at how good it was being that the main writing force in this band prior to this album, Peter Wichers, and also one of the original members left. Replacement Daniel Antonsson and Ola Frenning do a good job on guitars with the occasional solo.
This album is better than their last and definitely the best since "Natural Born Chaos." If they continue down this path, I wouldnt be surprised if we get another release like that in another year or so.
