Whitechapel was one of those bands that got my attention through the large amount of internet buzz they were receiving. Their first album, "The Somatic Defilement" really didnt impress me that much. So much so that I almost didnt bother to give their new album a listen. That was until they posted the title track on their MySpace.

When I first heard the song "This Is Exile," I was surprised at how much the band had improved. Although the main breakdown in the middle was their typical sound, the death metal aspect to this band had improved tenfold and that provoked me to check out the rest of the album, and its no different.

With this album, Whitechapel has pulled themselves out of the Job For A Cowboy shadow that their first album placed them in. Although they didnt totally change their sound that much, they really figured out how to write quality tracks. The structuring, riffing and even lyrics all have improved from their debut album. Breakdowns are still very eminent throughout the whole disc, but they wrote them where they fit, rather than throwing them in wherever they wanted to fit the generic sound of the genre.

This album is one of my favorites of the year and has totally changed my perception of them. The two instrumental tracks put somewhat of a damper on the album, but the rest of the album is filled with quality songs. Defintiely pick this up.

Favorite songs - This Is Exile, Possession, Exalt, Somatically Incorrect, Eternal Refuge
