"Nuthin' But A 'G' Thang" was the first single off Dr. Dre's debut solo album "The Chronic" and also made the relatively unknown rapper Snoop 'D-O-double G' become a household name (and later one of the most famous rappers of all time). Now, what can be said about the song that hasn't been said before? It sure is a hip-hop classic and one of the songs that truly represent the 'G-Funk' and west coast sound of the early 90's. Even if it is in fact a Dr. Dre song, there is no debate over the fact that Snoop Dogg dominates this track and also has the sole songwriting credit for it. I'm not saying that Dre's verses are bad, but he really can't compete with Snoop and I'm pretty sure he knowns it himself. There are several versions of this release (on both CD singles and vinyl 12"), but the one I'm reviewing is the European CD single version that features two pretty good remixes (the 'Freestyle Remix' also features Daz Dillinger and Kurupt of Tha Dogg Pound), two instrumentals and the both the radio edit (with different lyrics) and album version. As stated, this is a classic tune that comes in several good versions, well worth getting if you are a fan or if you are just into the gangsta rap of the 90's.
