So, people seem to assume that just because you like Hole, you think Courtney Love is amazing and talented. I couldn't disagree with that assumption more. Personally, I think Courtney Love is only good at selling herself and manipulating truly talented people into doing things for her. Don't get me wrong, I like her vocal style and the lyrics she may or may not have written, but she's a crap guitar player. Plus, it seems like every time she releases an album there is some scandal involving her taking credit for other people's work and I don't even want to get into her personal life. Now that I've gotten that out of the way, on to things that actually matter, like, the review.
In my opinion, this is Hole's best album. It's no wonder it was their debut. It's clearly less raw than "Pretty on the Inside", but not slick and poppy like "Celebrity Skin". With a little help from Kurt Cobain it's the perfect female fronted grunge album. It opens strong with the catchy "Violet" and launches into the first single "Miss World", the acoustic and melancholy "Doll Parts" is nicely seated in the middle of the album and "Rock Star" is the perfect closer. There really isn't a skippable track on this album. Some of my favorites include "Rock Star", "Violet", "Asking for it", "Miss World" and "She Walks on Me". If you like grunge at all, ignore whatever issues you may have with Courtney Love and just listen to the album.
