In 1996, a year before the 'special edition' re-release of the original Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm put out a Star Wars 'multimedia project' titled "Shadows Of The Empire", this project consisted of a novel written by Steve Perry (that takes place between Star Wars episode V and VI), a video game for Nintendo 64, a comic book series by Dark Horse Comics, a number of toys and collectibles and this music score for the novel by composer Joel McNeely, performed by the 90-piece Royal Scottish National Orchestra and 150-piece Chorus in Glasgow, Scotland. Being a huge Star Wars nerd, I'm well familiar with the stories of "Shadows Of The Empire" and it's actually one of few 'extended universe' parts I can stand (I love the "Clone Wars" TV shows as well). With all that being said, this is a pretty good music score, Joel McNeely stays true to John Williams original score for the Star Wars movies (by also using Williams opening theme and a part of "Darth Vader's Theme (The Imperial March)" in parts of this score) while still adding his own style to it. The score is a good mix between beautiful mellow parts and hard hitting adventure parts, but unlike John Williams score to the Star Wars movies, "Shadows Of The Empire" is just not as memorable and that lowers my rating for this soundtrack. However, I would like to point out that the multimedia part on this enhanced CD is great, lots of interesting information and art work from the "Shadows Of The Empire" project. For Star Wars fans this soundtrack is worth getting, for the rest, it's good but would you bother checking it out?
