Not to many people know that Pantera started out as a glam metal band. Going nowhere with there glam metal sound they decided to start fresh in 1990 with Cowboys From Hell. Ditching the cloths and makeup may have been the best decision they have ever made. This album is what started there thrash metal career and what started there huge step into the world.
Cowboys From Hell, Psycho Holiday and Domination are a groovy thrash metal sound throughout the tracks that deliver pummeling riffs and insane guitar solo's. Cemetery Gates and The Sleep were a softer approach on Dime with the acoustic and doing a fine job of it. The Medicine Man was an interesting track with a dark and haunting atmosphere in it. Dime has to be one of the best rhythm workers and soloist of his time; they are so fast, melodic and just mind blowing. Rex is a great bassist and is very strong when he needs to be, plus he bring such a great sound in Cemetery Gates, Medicine Man and The sleep. I have always taken Vinnie for granted over the years, but later on I really loved his drum work. He does a great job throughout the album and you can hear the connection that him and Dime have together through the songs. The most stand out track for me was The Art Of Shredding, the band felt so in sync on this song.
During the last album Phil tried to sound more like the 80's singers in that era and failed doing it. On here he has that low growl while singing or that sonic fast high pitched sound. He puts a lot of raw force behind his voice and it makes the lyrics more meaningful. He put in a parts of his later years that I found annoying, but it didn't keep me distracted to much. The lyrics were very dark on the album dealing with drugs, loss of a loved one and pushing through what life gives you. The album is as angry as it sounds.
Overall: This album is an awesome way for Pantera to begin anew and kick some ass along the way. It's a shame they were trying to be like everyone else in the begging. This is a pure heavy metal album that will slap you in the face and make you want to just head bang all day. If you have never listened to Pantera you need to start here and just work your way up, don't even look back.
