Geddy Lee – Lead vocals and bass
Alex Lifeson – guitars and vocals
John Rutsey – Drums and vocals
Canadian born band Rush released their self titled album in the early 70's. Spending little time with their producer, the band didn't quite like the sound that they received from him. Which led them to Toronto where they produced themselves, getting much better results. Rush has been around for over 30 years as a band and hearing them on there first album may shock some new fans.
All eight songs are good on this album, but there are a few problems. Their first, of course, is that it sounds nothing like any other Rush album. If I didn't see the huge Rush logo on the cover of the album I would have thought this was a lost Led Zeppelin record. Led Zeppelin is a huge influence on this album, but it's not a bad thing. Alex and Geddy do a great job through out the album, they have a very heavy blues and metal inspiration on here. Alex busts out those solo's that have a good amount of blues. Which is something you don't really see in later albums. Geddy's bass I have always loved and it has not changed my mind with this album. One of their weak links would be the drummer John. He isn't bad, but a very average player. He doesn't really go off beat to much with the rest of the band and can seem bland or boring.
Geddy doesn't miss a note when it comes to singing, even though he sounds like Robert Plant on here. The biggest gripe I had with the album was the lyrics, they are a complete knock off of Zeppelin. Saying baby and oh yeah a bunch of times it's nothing really original, to me at least.
Overall: This was a little above average for me and could have been done better. The only song on here that goes beyond the rest was Working Man, it sounded more like the Rush we are going to hear in future efforts. John Rutsey would never tour with Rush for medical reasons, so they hired there new drummer Neil Pert to fill his spot. It's amazing how much one member can do for a band and it would later bring Rush up the next level.
