First off I'd like to say that Negative 263 is a band from Abilene, Texas that you probably haven't heard of but that may all be changing soon. While the band is relatively new to fans outside of Texas, they sure are making a name for themselves inside the state and it's only a matter of time before they start expanding that sound to fans all over the place. They have opened shows for bands like Staind, Unearth, Static X, Otep, Black Light Burns, Powerman 5000, Five Finger Death Punch, and It Dies Today. Plus an endorsement from Jagermeister has helped them land spots on the Jagermeister Musictour as well as the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival. But none of that would have been possible without a strong debut album and a solid listing of shows all over the state. But this album, Capitalize Now is what started it all.
Catastrophe starts off the cd to let you know just how the band rocks out: straight forward and heavy. With tasty guitar riffs and pounding drums the singer, J Scott screams and yells his way through the song. This is good ol' fashion bang-your-fuckin-head-to music. It has that earlier Slipknot feel to it where it's just so natural for you to get into. Waylon's Infractions follows the same formula but manages to have a sound all of its own. The band keeps that same intensity throughout the album without once seeming bland or boring. And with songs like B.A.W.T., Blood Drive, Rotting, and Dressed II Kill - the songs really come out at you fast paced and chaotic. But they can also show you a softer, a bit more melodic change of pace with songs like Lost and Broken and My Enemy. It shows that J Scott can sing just as good as he can scream. Really the album from start to finish is a great for fans of metal, metalcore, and even nu-metal. The band really comes out full force and shows what they have to offer on this debut. And while the production value isn't what you would find on say, an Avenged Sevenfold cd, it's damn good for being an independent release. The artwork and design are all top-notch and look great.
The only downfall is that I think this cd is now out-of-print but if you live in Texas you may still be able to find it in stores. Of hell, if you're really interested, email the band and see if you can work something out. It's definitely an album worth listening to. But check out their MySpace and help support a band that deserves it.
