Gojira was once known as Godzilla, but due to legal issues had to change their name. Gojira is rōmaji spelling of the fictional monster Godzilla, so I’m sure they didn’t have a complete loss in the legal battle. Terra Incognita would be there first attempt to mainstream and my first time listening to them. I have to say I was not disappointed with this, but I felt a few things could have been done differently.

A good majority of this album leans more into death/grind metal. A progressive feel likes to work its way into the tracks with breakdowns, clean guitars and odd time signatures that help them have a more original sound. Satan Is a Lawyer, 1990 Quatrillions De Tonnes, and In the Forest slow down the pace having a haunting atmosphere. I have to say the instrumental tracks like 04, 5988 Trillions De Tonnes, and 1990 Quatrillions De Tonnes are interesting, but can seem like tracks to skip. A few songs can seem repetitive through the guitar work, but the drums are a huge highlight.

Lyrics seem to deal with depression and humanity; they remind me of Opeth and can be poetic. The sound quality on the vocals could be better, but Joe Duplantier does a great job with his growls and clean vocals
Overall: I have to say when I heard my friend tell me about a French progressive metal band I wasn’t sure what I would be listening to. Granted this album isn’t as progressive as there other releases, but it doesn’t make it a bad album at all.
