Ah, Hired Geeks. I first heard of the band through the wonderful cd, Dead Baby Vs. Jesus, "a chaotic combination of ska, punk, and metal influenced quirk rock." The compilation opened me up to many new and exciting artists such as Dog Fashion Disco, Tub Ring, Daiquiri, Screaming Monkey Boner, Folly, Mong Hang, Duct Tape Mustache, Nuclear Rabbit, and Mod Flanders Conspiracy. Listening to that album really nailed the type of music that I had been waiting and looking for. Through time I acquired many of the albums from the aforementioned bands and the Hired Geek's 4 song EP, Proridiculous was one of the final cds that I happily purchased.

Though only four songs made this ep, it has left a lasting impression on me. And with such a cool album cover, it just drew me further in. 'Song Factory' is an upbeat ska influenced, strange experimental type of hallucinatory journey of tempo changes and quirky bass lines. The song is not like any traditional song you've ever heard before as it keep you guessing what's coming next. The overall feel of the song is reminiscent of older Tub Ring. 'Like It Or Not' is a little slower and has a definite groove to it. This free spirited ode to smoking the ganja has a more laid back Sublime feel. The horns drive the song home while the bass keeps your head nodding along. "Ichi" feels a little crowded, like they really tried to cram too many head-strong lead tracks into one song, if that makes any sense. It is amazing how the singing just flows into all the different instrumentation going on. And finally "Slacklife" leads off with a jumping bass line that hops around leading you along. And the horns remind you that they're just as important and can take the lead too. While it'd be hard to sing along, the song still leaves you wanting to bob and dance.

This ep is short and sweet and just teases you. It would have been a great lead in to an exciting full length but....so far nothing yet. So what I enjoy most about this band is that it isn't straight up ska or a typical experimental band, it mixes and matches certain styles to blend a very tasty batch of songs. And I think if you enjoy the early inception of Tub Ring as well as Nuclear Rabbit and Duct Tape Mustache, it'll fit in nicely with your listening stlye.
