The Jonbenét is a noisy, dirty, post-hardcore screaming machine of a band from Houston, Texas. 4 dudes throwing their heart at the listener with everything they have. Ugly / Heartless is the band's first full-length release through Pluto Records and they wanted to show who the fuck they were with 12 blistering tracks. With one listen you can tell that's just what they done.

The album was recorded live in a studio to keep that raw atmosphere, careful not to have too much of a polished effort, which really works with their sound. The overall vibe of the band resembles parts of Everytime I Die with The Blood Brothers with a fast-pace hardcore essence.

'Devils' swaggers it's way as the first song with a low down dirty southern feel with feedback screeching, drums pounding, and guitars shredding. 'Eating White Lighting Pt. 2' continues the group's first part from 'The Plot Thickens' EP, and just tears shit up. From shrill screams to deep growls, this song changes pace & tempo throughout it's 3 minutes but still keeps a strong structure and drives home a pounding listen. To me, it's a strong stand-out track that has an unbelievably heavy build up that just explodes into the final minute of the song. Fucking amazing. Not skipping a beat, 'We Eat Our Young' sneaks in to kick up the pace and aggression only to have 'Black Lion' come into play to slow things down a bit but not lose any of the heaviness. 'Love Is A Dog From Hell' and 'Why We're Dead' both seem to twist and turn between bluesy southern guitar riffs and heavy hardcore parts, both of which are littered with intense screaming and yelling. 'It Fell To The Earth' is another stand-out track as it has an extremely slow yet heavy intro that leads to an amazing journey of a song. 'Zepplin' is almost the longest song on the album and with it, it shows that the band has more than just the short and sweet tracks. 'Hearts In The Jar' is the perfect way for this album to end. It's epic sounding with the guitar riffs stretched out, it has yelling group vocals, the bass lines are sharp and punctual. It's just a great way to send the album off.

This is a group that really caught my attention from first seeing them live. Their live show just matches the intensity you hear in every song. What you hear is what you get: it's real, it's raw, it's dirty, and it comes from the heart. Easily, a very under-rated band. They take what hardcore is and make it their own sound. Sadly they have broken up, but they have left behind a hell of a cd for future listeners. RIP - The Jonbenét .
