[Part 1]

I'm the son of rage and love
The Jesus of suburbia
From the bible of none of the above
On a steady diet of soda pop and Ritalin
No one ever died for my sins in hell
As far as I can tell

At least the ones I got away with
But there's nothing wrong with me
This is how I'm supposed to be
In a land of make believe
That doesn't believe that don't believe in me

Get my television fix sitting on my crucifix
The living in my private womb
While the moms and brads are away
To fall in love and fall in debt
To alcohol and cigarettes and marey Jane
To keep me insane and doing someone else's cocaine

[Part 2: City Of The Damned]

Alot
Of the 7-11 were I was taught
The motto was just a lie
It says home is were your heart is
But what a shame
Cause everyone's heart
Doesn't beat the same
We're beating out of time
City of the dead
At the end of another lost highway
Sign misleading to nowhere
city of the damned
lost children with there dirty faces today
no one really seem s to care
I read the graffiti
In the bathroom stall
Like the holy scriptures of a shopping mall
And so it seemed to confess
It didn't say much
But it only confirmed that
The center of the earth
Is the end of the world
And I could really care less

[Part 3: I don't care]

I don't care if you don't
I don't care if you don't care [x5]

Everyone is so full of shit
Burn and raised by hipocrits
Hearts recycled but never saved
From the cradle to the grave
We are the kids of war and peace
From Anaheim to the middle east
We are the stories and disciples
Of the Jesus of suburbia
Land of make believe
And it don't believe in me
Land of make believe
And I don't believe
And I don't care!

[Part 4: Dearly beloved]

dearly beloved are you listening?
I cant remember a word that you were saying
Are we demented or are we disturbed?
The space that's in between insane and insecure
Oh therapy, can you please fill the void?
Am I retarded or am I just overjoyed
Nobody's perfect and I stand accused
For lack of a better word, and that's my beat excuse

[Part 5: Tales of another broken home]

To live and not to breathe
Is to die In tragedy
To run, to run away
To find what you believe
And what I left behind
This hurricane of fucking lies
I lost my faith to this
This town that don't exist

So I run
I run away
To the light of masochist
And I leave behind
This hurricane of fucking lies
And I walked this line
A million and one fucking times
But not this time

I don't feel any shame
I wont apologize

When there ain't nowhere you can go
Running away from pain
When you've been victimized
Tales from another broken home

Song Facts - Show All?
Director Samuel Bayer said this was going to be his "swan song" video. But he went on to direct Green Day's "Working Class Hero" music video.

I heard this song at a dress rehersal that Green Day had. It was an awesome song. It was like 6 min. though. I don't know if it was that long for a live show or what but it was a good song especially musically.

...wow. who ever thought green day would make a nine-minute song? i think the real surprise is the fact that it IS nine minutes. the song itself, musically, isn't mind blowing, but the way the song flows is wicked. it's like a bunch of green day songs glued together which, structurally, isn't that impressive but it's easily one of the best songs on the cd. fantasmic. the second part's my favourite.

There are a bunch of cd's out there that you skip around the tracks because the songs don't go well in the order they are. this cd is far from that and this song is a good example of what i mean.

First off I'd like to just ask who the fuck cares how long the song is? This isn't really a song, it's 5 songs fused together. Personally I think City of the Damned is the best.

i prefer the first part to be honest, but the 2nd part is still rele good. i dont know, i still think the two 'nine-minute epics' (as they were described in Kerrang! magazing) were used as a gimmic.

I'm sorry, I just can't bring myself to be positive about this song. Green Day didn't mature, they traded in their upbeat tempo and what made them fun to listen to in the first damn place for this Quasi-Emo bullshit. Not to mention, the lyrics look like Green Day have been listening to too much Atreyu and Avenged Sevenfold. Nothing really special. I am very disappointed.

How can anyone hate this song? It jumps from mood to mood, no matter what mood your in there is part of this song that catches you. And you can't say Green Day has given up anything from their old music, they still use the same foundation chords to all their music, the only thing that appears to be significantly different is more instruments to the mix, which in my opinion adds more flavor to the song. If you want 20 copies of dookie, go burn 20 copies, but Green Day is the only modern band that I know that evolves the best over time with their music and you have to admit their evolving music gets better everytime. This song is a prime example.

DeathMetal all you do is sit back and defend yourself and saying your an idiot to defend yourself from insults from others. If the site is filled with idiots, and it pisses you off, then leave, no one likes your opinion anyways. You obviously dont know anything about Green Day, or music for that matter, so do us all a favor and leave.

I can't stop listening to this song. For some reason, it brings to mind T.S. Eliot's epic poem, _The Wasteland_. These five speakers, characters, voices, share the story of Green Day's wasteland, Suburbia. They tell a story of the same place, but so differently, as each have seen it, much as the different characters were used to fully portray Eliot's London in his poem. The transitions within the music are smooth and well executed; the different parts are noticably different, but one often forgets how the song got there. Also, this device of using different speakers is a perfect way to share the different facets of Suburbia. I have rarely (only The Mars Volta comes to mind) seen the use of this outside of literary works, as most songwriters choose a single speaker, one that is typically taken for granted as the songwriter himself.

Definitly my favorite on the album. Great video I was surprised when i seen this for the first time well when it debuted on Much Music which I think is a channel of dumb and dumber proportions. But the video has meaning to me in ways I never could look at a video. A 9 minute song that keeps you moving through the whole damn thing and singing along. Greenday have created a masterpiece and there is nothing else to be said.
