Never stop the car on a drive in the dark
Never look for the truth in your mother's eyes
Never trust the sound of rain upon a river rushing
Through your ears

Arriving somewhere but not here

Could you imagine the final sound as a gun
Or the smashing windscreen of a car?
Did you ever imagine the last thing you'd hear as you're fading out
Was a song?

Arriving somewhere but not here

Chorus:
All my designs, simplified
And all of my plans, comprimised
And all of my dreams, sacrificed

Ever had the feeling you've been here before?
Drinking down the poison the way you were taught
Ever thought from here on in your life begins
And all you knew was wrong?

Arriving somewhere but not here

All my designs, simplified
And all of my plans, comprimised
And all of my dreams...

Did you see the redness block your part?
Did the scissors cut a way to your heart?
Did you feel the end before the suns of mothers
Tearing you apart?

Arriving somewhere but not here

This song is beautiful. To me, it just sounds like the thoughts of a child (later on, the victim) who has lost someone.. and doesn't quite know why. Whether their life ended by a bullet, car crash, etc... anything tragic like that is unclear to me. The lines 'never stop the car on a drive in the dark' and 'did you ever imagine the last thing you'd hear as you're fading out was a song' lead me to believe that it was an automobile accident.. where the victim slowly faded out to the tune of a song. 'Arriving somewhere but not here' is a masterpiece, and the chorus just elaborates on the accident, by stating that all my plans for the future, everything I had in mind to do with my life now means nothing. Later on in the song, you're treated to a solo, provided by Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth (you'll recognize it if you're a fan of opeth) which gives the song a beautiful, bluesy interlude.

Wow, you definetly know where you are listening to. But completly agree with you on ths being a true masterpiece. This album is a masterpiece and I haven't even listened it all the way trough. The Akerfield solo owns, that guy owns all!

Nothing much to add to all your pretty comprehensive appraisals. My favourite lyric is probably "Did you see the red mist block your path?" Not sure why though... Just seems to add to the sombre feel of the song.

'Sombre' is an apt description. These unflinching lyrics, the entire mood of the song - it gets me.
