Something has to change
Un-deniable dilemma
Boredom's not a burden
Anyone should bear
Constant over stimulation numbs me
But I would not want you
Any other way
It's not enough
I need more
Nothing seems to satisfy
I don't want it
I just need it
To breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive
Finger deep within the borderline
Show me that you love me and that we belong together
Relax, turn around and take my hand
I can help you change
Tired moments into pleasure
Say the word and we'll be
Well upon our way
Blend and balance
Pain and comfort
Deep within you
Till you will not want me any other way
It's not enough
I need more
Nothing seems to satisfy
I don't want it
I just need it
To feel, to breathe, to know I'm alive
Knuckle deep inside the borderline
This may hurt a little, but it's something you'll get used to
Relax...slip away
Something kinda sad about
The way that things have come to be
Desensitized to everything
What became of subtlety?
How can it mean anything to me
If I really don't feel anything at all?
I'll keep digging till
I feel something
Elbow deep inside the borderline
Show me that you love me and that we belong together
Shoulder deep within the borderline
Relax...turn around and take my hand.

I don't see how this song could be meaningful to anyone, it's about fingering a girl. Unless your some sort of sex guru, this song isn't very meaningful. But it is bad ass, one of Tool's best, definitely.

One of my favorite songs by Tool. Very few people can write a song about fingering and make it out to be an amazing song. Great way to start a great album.

And with the finger-knuckle-shoulder thing, people can't feel anything when they are "fingered" (graphic material). it doesn't bother them so they need more (knuckle). Finally, we will get to the point where nothing will bother us. shoulder is the extreme

I've read that it's about how censorship has become much more lax over the decades because people have become "Desensitized" from over-exposure to graphic material.

the ideas behind these lyrics are what makes manyard a phenominal lyricist. just the concept of going from finger to knuckle to elbow to shoulders. who else can make a song about fingering and make it this amazing.

Who cares about being desensitized anyway? it is the persons free will to buy what they want and listen to it or not if you don't like it turn it off. I personally think that its a great song with equally great "graphic material".

I don't think this song is about fingering a girl... I think it's a lot deeper than that. The idea of "finger deep inside the borderline" is symbolic of looking inside the world or yourself to find something that makes you feel, when all you feel is numb

I'm of two minds about this song. While I don't put it past Maynard to write a song about fingering a woman (he's not quite sane, after all) I think that xilicious has it right. Maynard just couched these feelings in vulgar terms to scare the "normals"

I see the song as more of a heroin addiction song than anything else, the way junkies keep needing biger fixes, but the censorship idea is interesting.

maybe the fingering of a girl is a metaphor for how far someone will go if you let them... First it's a finger, a nunckle, hand, arm, shoulder, untill they are completely inside and control you.

"Tool's main objective" is to be as ambiguous as possible about their writing and claim that it's built for interpretation, and solidify the illusion that it's intelligent by overusing poetic devices and have every pseudo-intelectual Metalhead who thinks Tool are something brilliant mindlessly drawn into their music. Seether said they prefer people to interpret their lyrics too, but in reality, they just suck ass. I still stand by my original opinion. Tool are boring, and the vast majority of their fans are fucking retards, and it's blatantly obvious. A few big words and far-out comparisons and you people claim it to be the most intelectual shit since Jeopardy. FUCK.

Anyway, this is a great song. Perfect way for Justin (bass) to introduce himself as a Tool member. very good. i would like to hear anyone try and compare what these guys can do with music. they're not boring. they even stated, themselves, that the reason for long songs and points of songs where it's slow... is to test the listener's patience. and patience is a virtue. oh well. my opinion.

Maynard is glorified as some brilliant writer when he's actually just one of the most boring individuals to ever grace Alternative Metal. 311 are unique as well, you insignificant tool. Name one other band that sounds like 311. Didn't think you could. Stick to your Linkin Park and A Perfect Circle, and alot the people with an incling of intelligence to talk, unless you're willing to dislodge your head from your own anus. Have a nice day.

this song represents stepping out away from what you have known and reaching for more - TO ME - sometimes it is very painful and fearful - you have to be willing to trust and willing to let go of self and all that you have known in order to attain that which you most desire - and once you DO let go you discover so much more than what you have ever known.

I'm guessing mr wired2 is tone deaf, and only listens to lyrics in songs. Which is only one aspect to music. Not to delve into cliche's, but music is considered a universal language; not because of what people say in the songs... Tool has a very unique sound. Lovely how some people have to qualify and rate every band compared to every other band instead of enjoying the bands the individual enjoys.
This song revolves around what the listener to believe the word "borderline" to be. Could be sanity, or countless other things... Which makes the song brilliant because it works on many levels... regardless of how many long words are in it.
If I hear a tool song on the radio, I know within two seconds its tool as they are very unique.

Maynard is a boring, self-obsessed dirtbag. He makes artless, pseudo-intellectual drivel for mindless, angsty teenagers to fritter away their lives on while inserting their own "deep" meanings into his contrived lyrics. That is, when he isn't obnoxiously lashing out at everything around him, so conceitedly convinced of his own brilliance that he is apparently blind to the fact that he is a stupid, ignorant metalhead preaching to a choir of stupid, ignorant metalheads who all believe that they are part of some enlightened movement of new-age artists, but who are in fact the sort of soulless drones Maynard pretends to satirize, all hopelessly buying into whatever dark-for-the-sake-of-being-dar k tripe he feeds them. Deadwired, Tool is one of the greatest bands on the face of the earth. Tool completely owns 311, and 311 would NEVER be as good as Tool.

Lastly, this song, stated by Maynard himself, is about popular culture pushing the limits of the media over and over again. If you don't believe me look it up on Wikipedia.

EVERYONE who left a comment here except for skull dude is a total idiot. if you cant understand the music and you're gonna leave "gay ass" (literally) comments about it you're fucking lame. the poetic nature of his words are incredibly beautiful. and as far as art is concerned- the artist (whoever the artist may be in any scenario) tries to depict something in his art that translates what he is feeling- or what he is thinking- when the art is made availible to the masses, we are then given the opportunity to define and relate to it ourselves because the art is taken out of context and since we do not have direct communication with the artist we become left to our own devices and interpretations... but we make the interpretation based on our own intelligent experience and off of what we know about the artist. in my estimation the "INTERPRETATION" of the music made by those who posted prior to me (excluding XLORDCJX) was done by complete morons. come on guys. u can do better than that!

If I may throw my opinions into the mix, I believe that, while the song may be written about fisting, the true meaning of this song goes far deeper than that. In my opinion, the song is making a statement or observation about how we have become so jaded in today's world that we have to keep going a little bit farther and push the limits just to feel anything at all and that since survival has become so much easier (compared to the standard of living hundreds of years ago), we become bored and are willing to try anything to keep ourselves occupied. Just my humble opinion of course.

hahah whatever guys, its just a good fucking song. the lyrics probably ARE about people needing over stimulation... but theres nothing insanely genious or mysterious about it- and certainly nothing worth arguing about. its just a cool analogy. go maynard! love to jam with this one

Yo. The song is a metaphor for drug addiction. I also think it's a conversation between the user and the drug. "It's not enough, I need more.. I just need it... to know I'm alive" is the user crying out for more. "Show me that you love me and that we belong together" is the drug coaxing the user to indulge. I guess fisting was deemed appropriate because it's an extreme and dangerous form of indulgence- and because the more you put in yourself the more you'll need to fill the hole.

I love "relax, turn around and take my hand". Turn toward me or turn away?

Why does everyone pay any attention to someone who says 311 trumps Tool?
I mean come on man, if youre going to try to take Tool off their throne and say there are bands better than them, which I personally believe there are a handful of great bands better than Tool, then at least say Zeppelin or Floyd or The Beatles or something dude, 311? Are you seriously trying to have a conversation about music right now?like wtf dude?

LMAO ok sum wierdo said 311 is better then TOOL? correct me if im wrong but arent they that bad that sang that song "however far away i will always love u , however long i stay ...yada yada yada" theyre not even in the same league as eachother! two TOTALLY different bands. and atleast with tool anyone and everyone can get their own interpretation and meaning from their lyrics, being able to do something like that is a form of art so if your gonna go diss them atleast find a band remotely similar to them in style and try again buddy LMAOOOOO.
i think u got ur pants on too tight and the lack of circulation if fucking with ur head

However you see this song no matter what it's fucked up. It could mean drugs, or it could mean rape, like in prison sex. This song is well done and scares the crap out of me at times. Maynard is genius with words (Please don't flame me MurderCapital).
