What's coming through is alive
What's holding up is a mirror
But what's singing songs is a snake
Looking to turn this piss to wine
They're both totally void of hate,
But killing me just the same
The snake behind me hisses
What my damage could have been
My blood before me begs me
Open up my heart again
And I feel this coming over like a storm again
Considerately
Venomous voice, tempts me,
Drains me, bleeds me,
Leaves me cracked and empty
Drags me down like some sweet gravity
The snake behind me hisses
What my damage could have been
My blood before me begs me
Open up my heart again
And I feel this coming over like a storm again
I am too connected to you to
Slip away, to fade away
Days away, I still feel you
Touching me, changing me,
And considerately killing me
Without the skin,
Beneath the storm,
Under these tears
The walls came down
And the snake is drowned and
As I look in his eyes,
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of those times
I could have cried then
I should have cried then
And as the walls come down and
As I look in your eyes
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of the times
I have died
And will die
It's all right
I don't mind
I am too connected to you to
Slip away, to fade away
Days away, I still feel you
Touching me, changing me,
And considerately killing me.

Song Facts
Speculation has surrounded the song "H." The "meaning" of this song has seldom been detailed by the band, as they do not regularly comment on such things. However on several occasions, specifically on November 23, 1996 during a show at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia, Maynard does grant some insight into the meaning of the song. Speaking to the audience he says, "Any of you ever seen those old Warner Bros. cartoons? Sometimes there's that one where the guy is trying to make a decision and he's got an angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other. Seems pretty obvious, right? The angel is trying to give him good advice while the devil is trying to get him to do what's bad for him. It's not always that simple though. A lot of times they're not really angels or devils but friends giving you advice, looking out for your best interest but not really understanding what's going to be best for you. So it kind of comes down to you. You have to make the decision yourself. This song is called H." The song was discussed live during a few other shows around this time, one example being on February 23, 1997, when Maynard introduced this song by referring to the shoulder angel and devil, and also said it's about a hurtful yet dependent relationship.[16] In an interview Keenan gave in December 1996, he commented, "My son's name is Devo H. That's all I'll say." It is also of note that the song's working title was "Half Empty", as it was introduced during a mini-tour of California by the band in December 1995. In the book, "Teachings of Don Juan, a Yaqui Way of Knowledge", the author refers to a character named H. Keenan.

the soulful lyrics and soft background percussion and guitars make this a soothing anethem while at the same time blasting out at various points to keep the heavy feeling of what tool is all about. masterful song

This song is amazing to me. For them to include a song that's so personally touching to Maynard that he won't play it live (or so I've heard) on the album speaks measures for Tool's artistic value.

This song has been played live. Just thought I'd correct that... "The walls come down and as I look in your..."
That's the best part of the song. What an impressive piece. Modern music hasn't failed yet.

This song is just...wow. It has to be my favorite song ever or close to it. This sounds weird but this would be the kinda song I'd want to have sex to but it can't be just meaningless sex, it would have to be with someone that means something to you so you get the full effect. Maynard...I salute you.

This is considerately one of the best Tool songs. Music and words/vocals alike, nothing short of great. It's a very emotional song and very effective to the listener. Good stuff.
Avatar #19: Shadow_Walker - added: 08/29/2004, 12:21 AM
This is my favorite song of all time, nothing has or will ever beat it...Tool is also my favorite band, so it kinda fits. Words can't describe why I like this song so much. You just have to hear it for yourself to find out. Tool is not for everybody but if you happen to love their music like some, then you fucking kick ass! rock on m/

I love the sound of this song...
Avatar #22: MwR - added: 09/17/2004, 07:02 PM
To answer Big D: I read this from a few Tool sites and articles; Maynard James Keenan is just a penname; his real name is something like James Hurbert Keenan. It can also be seen that he has two lives about him. Once again, I read that he had a history of being schizo, but I don't know. I guess this song in particular is about an internal struggle between the James (innocent) and Maynard (dark, serpent) sides. If so, that's an awesome way to put it. But one of my favorite things about Tool is that they present their songs for open-interpretation. Take it how you wish. I just get bored and I thought I could try and answer that. I'm still bored. ha
Avatar #23: MwR - added: 09/19/2004, 10:39 PM
and the H could be seen for his real middle name, which makes it cool. yeah, i'm sorry, i think i just get really bored... too bored. i'm still here... this needs to stop

If you're wondering what the song is about, I've been told it's about heroin, thus "H," but hell, it could be about anything.

Avatar #31: RiseOfAsh - added: 11/29/2004, 04:36 AM
About this song: I have heard (rumor, unconfirmed) that while it has been played live before (only twice) it is VERY rare because it is very personal to Maynard. In essence, this song is about an internal struggle his son gives him. He doesn't want his son to go through an abusive childhood like he did, but looking at him reminds him of himself as a child, thus making him relive it. So in one moment he sees a reason to hate his son (and continue the cycle of abuse) and at the same time he feels love for him. He has to fight within himself because he has a past urging him to his dark side, but the good in him is fighting it because of the love of his child. As I've heard, this song is about that struggle.

Maynard's "awsome" vocals are a joke. He is nothing special at all.

what's so bad about ICP blackbird? they have pretty much the same message in thier music that tool does they may not be quite as good as tool but nontheless they still are very good songwriters/rappers and i still think this song is good

Avatar #44: metalhead - added: 07/30/2005, 03:50 AM
HAHA ICP are jokes, thats all they set out to be, and the succeeded. They are horrible "artist" if you could even call them that, along with almost every rapper that ever was. How anyone could compare them, and any message they convey, to anything of Tool's, is waaaaaaay beyond me. That's like comparing whiskey to water.
Avatar #45: seceipotgnillaf - added: 09/10/2005, 11:51 PM
ICP is the farthest thing from underground. there is a difference from being a great unkown band, and a well known unpopular band.
Avatar #46: RebdomineVoDkA - added: 09/12/2005, 03:46 PM
ICP arent insane at all, they are just gay. We shouldnt even be giving them recognition here..." there is a difference from being a great unkown band, and a well known unpopular band."..that was just great.

Avatar #50: Limited On Death - added: 07/20/2006, 12:22 AM
All ICP fans are like that because they know the band they like are the ones that suck so they make themselve feel better by saying other bands suck more when they should really just go out and buy some real music like Tool

Nah gotta clear the stigma about ICP fans not all ICP fans suck. I happen to love ICP but I agree theres a lot of jackass fans out there but thus is the same story for any band, Theres assholes everywhere deal with it. That kid wearing that ICp shirt yelling fuck slayer at ya may not have even been a fan. Kids just wear the shit cuz they think it looks cool or whatever. Fuck those kids , but don't lump us all into that group. I happen to like and love a great deal of music other than ICP, Tool being one of those bands. That being said this is an awesome song a great track on an album full of great music.
Avatar #54: Zoso_Les Paul - added: 02/04/2007, 10:37 AM
ICP's music is just simple rap trying to be goth nu-metal. If you listen to a song like H., its painful and orgasmic at the same time. ICP couldn't pull that off no matter how hard they tried, they just don't have enough talent.

If I'm not mistaken RiseOfAsh, and I wouldn't be surprised if I am, but isn't the description you gave relevant to Prison Sex? I think you may have gotten your tunes twisted. But again, I could be in the wrong. Whatever.

Though Tool does receive considerable airplay for a band of their caliber, and with songs of such legthy duration, I can't help but feel they could be played a whole hell of a lot more considering... I guess I'm glad they don't, though, because I would never want to tire of this band and especially this particular song. When cutting my teeth on Tool so many years ago, this was the song that intially made my jaw drop, my eyes close, and my mind open. Truly inspiring. The first Tool song I learned to play on the six string, and a song that wields great personal significance for me.

Touching me...changing me...
Considerately killing me.....

Why do people think this song is about heroin? Either way it's a great song no matter what you think it's about and for me I think it's about a struggle with yourself. The bass intro is out of this world and when it build up at the end like that it gives me goosebumps.
