Dopplersow 		Further to Zero's comment the '2' is generally thought to refer to an additional 2 chromosomes, e.g. the next stage of evolution, rather than 'pairs', seems to fit in with the song anyway, (though knowing Tool it's probably actually about sex) Great Song.

Mortal 		Uhm, we have 44 + 2 chromosomes. The next step in our evolution is supposed to be 46 + 2 chomosomes, according to some theory. Hence "46 and 2 is just ahead of me", wich is referring to his personal evolution.

MwR 		Never before have you heard a band take a riff at the beginning of a song and completely turn it inside-out mid song, then back again by the end. The bass line is amazing and the ending is perfect. This song is surely one of their greatest songs. love it.

Big D 		Wow...Mortal is right about what this song is about. It's about the next evolution, 46 + 2 chromosomes. I thought it was 48 (46 + 2) when I first saw this song's title. Plus, I thought it was about NASCAR's Jimmie Johnson until I realized that this song is not from 2004; it's from the late 1990s (boy, was I retarded). Anyway, it is a fantastic song by one of MJ Keenan's bands.

TheHole 		It took me sooo long to finally begin to understand this song. When I first got the album, I didn't even particularly like it because I just didn't get it. 46 and 2? Relevance?
But, then I started hearing the things about chromosomes and I started listening to the song and understanding it and now it is probably one of he greatest songs I have ever heard.
There is not and probably never will be another Tool. The amount of depth and thought and the abstract ideas that they latch on to are just crazy. I don't know how they do it.

Lucid Dreams 		I think and again I'm saying this is what I think, that he is evolving as a person. Now what exactly does he means by that I'm not to sure. When I listen to it I feel like he's saying that he'll do whatever it takes to become more human, I read in an interview once about how Maynard hates the way man thinks and feels and how we are born as men to push away things like our feelings and love. You can never take a Tool song as just one message, Maynard grabs so many things and brings it together to make one idea it's brilliant.
